How To Get Started With Email Marketing Automation!

Email is one of the oldest and most reliable ways to communicate with your customers. And while it’s been around for a long time, many entrepreneurs are still unsure about how to use email marketing automation effectively.

The first component in kick starting your email marketing automation journey is to set a goal…

  • Send company updates on a regular basis
  • To communicate new product updates
  • It can be to send promotional emails
  • To value add by sharing information which will help your target audience to solve the problems which they are facing
  • For customer support
  • For on boarding…

So you need to set a goal for the email automation and the workflow which you are setting up… there can be multiple automations which runs simultaneously… but you need to set a goal for every automation which you are setting up…

The second component is your target audience…

Defining your target audience for email marketing automation is challenging and I have simplified the whole process here…

For example you might be a consultant to cater to the needs of SME… then you to need to build an email list of sme entrepreneurs, decision makers in the SME space….

You can define your target audience based on various demographic factors such as age, gender, city, interests and behaviours…

If you are in e-commerce space… you need to have a deep understanding about your audience to create segments and send emails based on the segments..

So there are four types of segmentations

  1. Demographic segmentation – which is based on age, gender etc
  2. Geographic Segmentation – Which is based on the locality they live in
  3. Behavioural Segmentation – which is based on the activities they do like travelling, the pages they visited on your website, time since last purchase, the type of searches they have done, the frequency of the purchase etc… there are many more factors like this..
  4. Buyers journey segmentation- Which is based on the journey taken by the buyer like time since sign up, status of the user like whether he has opens the email and engages or not, is he a regular website visitor or not, how often does he purchases and how loyal he or she is to the brand..

The third component is to list down the pain points of your target audience… your target audience will face various challenges starting from recognizing the problem to considering the options to solve their problems and to choosing the right option which can solve their problem… so there are three stages in the buyers journey… which is problem recognition stage, consideration stage and the decision making stage….

For example let us take the example of new mom…. The mom might have challenges with recognizing the various problems faced due to child birth right from psychological issues to taking care of the child, feeding the child, diet and lot many things…

The fourth component in kick starting your email marketing automation is to choose the right tools to set up your automation… there are many email marketing automation tools in the market… but choosing the right tool will save you lot of time and energy and keep your automation system running smoothly with fewer manual interventions…. The fifth component in setting up your email marketing automation is to set up workflows… now workflow is a serious email sequences which are triggered based on the action taken by the user to achieve the goal set by you… these actions are called triggers and they guide your subscribers to take that specific action steps to achieve the goals set … in a sense email automation can be a lifesaver to you if you use it in the right manner…

It is like the dominoes effect… when triggered, they create big impact at the end of the sequence…

The sixth component in email marketing automation is to create content your target audience will love to consume and take action… creating content is the most interesting and challenging part of any marketing effort…. So the best way to create content for email marketing automation is… you need to prepare a pain point chart based on your target audience persona… and if you can answer the questions asked by your target audience in all these three stages of their journey… then we are looking at awesome content topics for you to create…

The seventh component in setting up your email marketing automation journey is to design your lead magnet and to build your email list…

Building your email list is the most crucial part of email marketing automation… in fact I would say that it is the fulcrum of the gear box when it comes to scaling up your sales by 300% year on year…

The eighth component of email marketing automation is to set up the funnel…. Now the funnel which I am talking about is not a typical sales funnel… but a funnel which will help you to build lifelong customers who will travel with you forever…

So to build a funnel… you need to have your website system, the landing page system and the lead magnet ready so that you can start building email list….
